The Judiciary is accepting applications from qualified persons to be included in its Roster of Court Interpreters for the following languages:

• Creole
• Spanish
• French
• Tagalog

The Court Interpreter will serve both the Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Courts located in the Islands and will play a key role in assisting the Court by providing interpretation and translation services during Court proceedings.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Be at least eighteen (18) years old
• High School Diploma
• Be a citizen, legal resident, or have the legal right to remain and work in the TCI
• Able to read, write, speak, and communicate fluently in both the relevant foreign language and English
• Be of good character
• Be reliable and flexible enough to support assignments on short notice
• Be able to translate orally in English and appropriate foreign language in a manner that preserves the tone and level of language and which accurately includes everything that is said, without summarizing, or adding or omitting meaning.
• Be able to interact professionally and cooperatively with Judges, Magistrates, Attorneys and Court personnel
• Complete a one-week orientation period
• Sign an oath to comply with Code of Ethics for Court Interpreters

On 5^th August, 2022, Anthony Stephen Gruchot was sworn in by His Excellency the Governor Nigel Dakin as a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands. His Lordship will begin duties on 1^st September 2022.

Justice Gruchot is a graduate of the Sheffield Hallam University in England and he obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Sheffield University, England, in 1998.

He was admitted as a solicitor of England and Wales in April 2000 and was called to the Bar of England and Wales as a Barrister through Lincoln’s Inn in November 2006. He practised in Sheffield England for seven years and then in Doncaster England for four years where he practised in family matters, civil and commercial litigation, estates and trusts, landlord and tenant disputes, property disputes, construction matters and professional negligence. He was an active member of the Sheffield and District Law Society, latterly serving as its Vice President in 2011.

His Lordship relocated to the Turks and Caicos Islands in October 2011 and was called to the Bar in the Turks and Caicos Islands in January 2012. He began his career at the Bar here with Miller Simons O’Sullivan where he was involved in commercial and civil litigation. In December 2012 together with Stephen Wilson QC he opened the Turks and Caicos Islands office of Graham Thompson & Co where he continued practicing in commercial and civil litigation before the Magistrate’s Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, as well as employment law before the Labour Tribunal and Labour Commissioner. From 2017 he has regularly sat as an acting Magistrate.

On 23^rd June, 2022 Mr. B. St. Michael Hylton O.J., Q.C. was sworn in by the Acting Governor, Anya Williams as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court from 1^st July, 2022 to 31^st August, 2022.

Mr. Hylton is an Attorney-at-Law with a distinguished career in both the private and public sectors. A graduate of the University of the West Indies and the Norman Manley Law School, he spent the first 24 years of his professional life at one of Jamaica’s leading law firms. In 2001 he resigned from the firm to accept appointment as Solicitor General of Jamaica, a position he held until he retired in 2007 to return to private practice.

Between 2010 and 2016 Mr. Hylton served as chairman of the General Legal Council – the statutory body that regulates the legal profession in Jamaica – and he has chaired other regulatory bodies including the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, the Financial Services Commission and the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority. In 2016 he was appointed as a Commissioner of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission and has been its deputy Chairman since 2021.

Mr. Hylton has written and published numerous legal articles and has made many presentations at conferences throughout the Caribbean region and elsewhere. He is admitted to practice in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and the British Virgin Islands.

In 1995 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel, and in 2006 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica in recognition of his contribution to Law and the Public Service.
